Today we explored The Badlands in South Dakota. The temperature was about 85 degrees, but the sun made it feel much hotter. We made sure to pack lots of water and to apply a lot of sunscreen throughout the day. I was amazed at the beauty of these bad lands and how far they stretch across South Dakota.
We decided to start out hiking the Notch Trail together. We were all doing fine until we came to “the ladder.” It was definitely challenging, but we made it up to the top. I found the height a bit scary and the twins did not feel like going on, so I opted to stay back with the two of them while Jason and Jackson took off in search of the end. Jackson is always up for an adventure and this proved to be right up his alley. Jason and Jackson had a great time and I know it is a memory they will have forever. After they returned, we had to go back down the ladder. Once again, it was challenging! We pretty much held everyone up from coming up the ladder to going down the ladder for quite awhile. It’ll be something that the twins will find funny one day – just not today.
After hiking the Notch Trail, we took a very short hike on the Window Trail. It was a quarter of a mile trail that was paved. It was really easy, so once again the boys took off and climbed on the rocks around the end of the trail. We finished the Window Trail quickly and then headed on over to the Door Trail. This trail was another short trail (0.75 miles) that we finished quickly. The boys wanted to explore a little further, so Abby Kate and I headed back to the car to cool down and rest.
We spent the rest of our time at the Badlands National Park driving on the Badlands Loop Road. Towards the end of our drive, we came upon a group of pronghorns. We even saw one climbing on the rocks towards the very top! The sights were breathtaking and they went on forever. It is really amazing to see God’s creation! We serve an awesome God!
