Red Rocks and Railways – Day 7

We were excited to see the Garden of the Gods this afternoon. Unfortunately when we arrived, so did everyone else. We tried to find a parking spot, but could not find any. We headed back out and over to the Visitor Center for a little while. After some time in the Visitor Center, we decided to drive back through. We did not plan to park and hike because we had agreed to come back later on in the day. We enjoyed our drive through the Garden of the Gods and when we came up on the “Balanced Rock” we found a parking spot! We spent quite awhile climbing on the rocks and getting pictures. The kids really enjoyed the rocks and I think their favorite rock was the “Kissing Camels” because they could so easily see it.

After spending some time at the Garden of the Gods, we headed through the town of Manitou Springs to the Cog Railway Depot. We boarded our train and rode to the summit of Pikes Peak. We really enjoyed the train! We were excited to be at another 14,000+ foot summit on top of Pikes Peak! When we reached the summit, the clouds were rolling in and we could not see anything. Plus it was bitterly cold up top. We only had about 30 minutes at the summit before heading back down. Before we boarded the train, it began snowing! On the ride down the mountain the snow changed over to hail (it started out as pea-sized and ended up being dime-sized).

We had hoped to head back over to the Garden of Gods, but it was raining and wet. We decided to go ahead and check into our hotel. We enjoyed a fun night eating pizza and popcorn in our hotel room. It was not what we had planned, but I think we all enjoyed it!
